Floods hit nearly 331,000 in Batticaloa
Floods has affected over 331,000 people belonging to 87,832 families in the Batticaloa District, Disaster Management Centre sources said. Two people died in Eravurpattu and Manmunai North in the Batticaloa District in the floods caused by heavy rain that lashed the area during the last few days. Over 14,000 displaced people have been provided shelter at 52 IDP camps. The worst hit area in Batticaloa district is Eravurpattu where 52,498 people belonging to 13,471 families have been affected. More than 500 houses were fully damaged and 2,051 houses partially damaged. Rs 50,000 will be granted as compensation to fully damaged houses and Rs 20,000 to partially damaged houses. Meanwhile, our Batticaloa District Group Correspondent Jawfer Khan reports that several areas in Batticaloa District have been inundated following heavy rain. Batticaloa recorded a 145.6mm rainfall in the district during the last 48 hours. Swami Vipulananda Aesthetic Studies Institute of the Eastern University and several schools in the Batticaloa District have also gone underwater. About 400 people belonging to 85 families in the tsunami resettlement scheme in Arayampathy have been displaced. |
